What Is a Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical intervention that reduces breast size and reshapes them. It is commonly sought to alleviate physical discomfort from excessively large breasts, leading to back, neck, and shoulder pain. Excess breast tissue and skin are surgically removed, leading to smaller and more proportionate breasts.

Is a Breast Reduction for You?

If you struggle with the size and weight of overly large breasts, you may be a candidate for reduction surgery. Genetic factors determine breast size, and even with the healthiest diet and exercise, breast tissue doesn't naturally reduce. You might be a candidate if you experience:

  • Heavy breasts causing discomfort
  • Painful bra straps cutting into shoulders
  • Chronic back pain
  • Difficulty finding well-fitting clothing

How it Works:

Breast reduction surgery, performed under anesthesia, removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin and reshapes the breasts. The nipples are often repositioned as well. Incision patterns vary based on your anatomy and aesthetic goals. Our surgeon sculpts the breasts, removes excess tissue, and closes incisions, resulting in smaller, lifted, and more proportionate breasts.

Anchor Incision

An incision is traced around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, and horizontally along the crease for a more extensive reduction.

Lollipop Incision

The surgeon combines a circular incision around the areola for a moderate reduction with a vertical incision down to the breast crease.

The Benefits of Breast Reduction

  • Decrease breast size
  • Better posture
  • Lift and lighten breasts
  • Relieve back, neck, and shoulder pain
  • Achieve proportionate, attractive breasts for your body
  • Minimize skin irritation
  • Greater ease in running and exercise
  • An easier experience finding bras and swimsuits that fit well
  • Restore a firm, rounded breast appearance

Breast reduction delivers transformative results, reducing breast size while enhancing shape and contour. Patients experience relief from pain and discomfort, improved self-confidence, and greater ease in finding well-fitting clothing. Scarring, while present, fades over time, leaving patients with attractive, lifted breasts and improved overall quality of life.

Your Recovery Process

Immediately After & Day of

After the breast reduction surgery, you will be taken to a recovery room, where you will be monitored by medical staff. You will likely experience some pain, swelling, and discomfort in the chest area; you will be given pain medication and instructions on how to care for your incisions and bandages.

Following Days

You’ll need to rest and avoid strenuous activity for the first few days after surgery. While you may experience bruising and swelling, this can be managed with ice packs and pain medication. You’ll also wear a surgical bra or compression garment to support your breasts and help reduce swelling.

One Week

You will have a follow-up appointment with your Athēnix surgeon to check your healing progress and remove any stitches or drains. Remember that you may be able to return to light activities but should still avoid anything too strenuous.

Two Weeks

Continue avoiding heavy lifting or strenuous exercise, although you may be able to return to work and resume some normal activities. Your breasts may still be swollen and tender, but should start to feel more comfortable.

Six Weeks

You can resume most normal activities, including exercise and lifting while avoiding activities that strain the chest area too much. At this point, your breasts should start to settle into their new shape and size.

Three Months

Your breasts should be fully healed, and any swelling or discomfort should be gone. While you may notice some scarring, this should fade over time.

Six Months

At six months, your breasts should be fully healed, and you should be able to enjoy the full benefits of your breast reduction surgery, including improved comfort, mobility, and self-confidence.
